Be a Guest on Other Podcasts to Grow Your Own

Uncategorized Dec 15, 2020

One of the most effective ways to grow your podcast audience is to be a guest on other podcasts.

While you're showcasing your knowledge and expertise in your niche on someone else's show, a new pool of listeners are discovering that you offer value on a topic that they're interested in. Plus, this new audience already loves to listen to podcasts! When you appear as a podcast guest, you're showing potential new listeners your style, opinions, and personality. Hopefully, this will tempt them to subscribe to your show too.

Finding the Right Shows to Appear On

You have to put a little work into finding great shows to be interviewed on. Consider quality over quantity. If you spam hundreds of podcasts just to see who hooks, not only will you be wasting the host's and listeners' time, but also your own. It’s important to find the best-suited podcasts to you and your style. This way, you’re likely to resonate with the highest number of listeners and bring them the most value.

If you're not quite sure where to start with finding the right shows to be interviewed on, here are a few pointers:

  • Sign up to podcast matchmaker services such as PodMatch, PodcastGuests, or MatchMaker.
  • Network like crazy! You can reach out to other creators in your niche in real life or on social media. Attending conferences is a great way to meet other podcasters face-to-face, but there are a myriad of great ways to forge a relationship online, too. Look for Facebook groups, LinkedIn groups, follow discussions on Reddit or Twitter, or check out Instagram hashtags and send messages!
  • You could even ask your audience what other shows they enjoy to get a better idea of which ones to target.
  • You can outsource the task. There are tons of gigs on Fiverr that either offer to take on that task within the specifications that you outline. There are even gigs where podcast hosts charge a small fee for allowing you to appear on their show.

You could also consider offering podcast hosts that you enjoy listening to an appearance exchange. If you appear on an episode of their show and vice versa, it is mutually beneficial for both of you.

Don't forget that your audience is at the heart of your podcast; you're looking for listeners you can serve with your awesome content, so keep any guest appearances focused.

How to Reach Out to Fellow Podcasters

Think about how you'd like to be approached. Also, remember that if you're a new podcaster, you will likely have to start at the bottom and appear on some smaller podcasts to build your profile before moving on to the big shows.

Write your target podcast host a concise e-mail and make your request clear from the start. Tell them what you want to discuss and why it would be exciting and valuable to their audience. Include a little information about your background; what makes you an authority on this topic? You can also let them know how you'll share and promote your guest appearance to drive listeners to their show.

Appearing on someone else's podcast is about giving, not just taking. Make sure you find podcasts that are the right fit for your expertise. By doing so, you will ensure your guest spot provides value for the podcast host and their audience.
